Clarus the Dogcow

“Moof!” 🐶🐮

Clarus is one of Apple’s oldest and quirkiest mascots — a pixel creature that is neither dog nor cow, but a “special genetic hybrid.” She was born in 1984 as a single glyph — the letter z — in Susan Kare’s Cairo font, the first dingbat typeface to ship on the Macintosh. For years she had no name and no story. Apple’s engineers gave her both.

What is a Dogcow?

She looks a bit like a dog, wears a cow’s spots, and answers to neither. Cornered on the question at an Apple print meeting on October 15, 1987, engineer Scott “ZZ” Zimmerman settled it forever: “It’s both, OK? It’s called a ‘dogcow.’” Dogcows don’t moo and they don’t woof — they say Moof!™ The sound itself was engineered in spring 1989, blending a cow sample with a recorded “oof” in MacRecorder.

Technical Note #31

In 1989, Apple engineer Mark “The Red” Harlan wrote her into the official record with Technical Note #31: The Dogcow — drawing rules, lore, and her name: Clarus. (Yes, she’s a she.) She spent her working life inside the Mac’s Page Setup dialog, standing sideways to show which way your paper would print.
